The book “Deep work”written by Cal Newport, talks about what is deep work, how it is useful, and how to learn deep work.

The first segment of the book talks about the idea of deep work.

Why to do deep work

  1. Deep work is valuable.
  2. Deep work is rare.
  3. Deep work is meaningful.

Here the writer has given a lot of examples where deep work have yielded better results. The book not only talks about the importance of deep work, but it talk about shallow work and its importance as well.

I have extracted these five lessons from the 1st segment of this book. These are:-

  1. Deep work yield better results (high quality research, write-ups etc.) Because here you are devoid of any distractions and you are focused on one thing.
  2. Deep work help complete a task in lesser time.
  3. Deep work is satisfactory.
  4. Not everyone can do deep work, but those who do, they achieve great heights.
  5. Deep work can also be used in this new economy.

Deep work can be bad for business but it is good for you. In this world full of distractions, where work usually involve a lot of socialization, deep work is very rare . Shallow work seems to be easier but it takes your energy unnecessarily and reduce your retention power. Today, everything is on Internet, you can argue, retention is not an important part of life. The long term impact of this shallow work is very devastating.

Although, today shallow work is very important in this fast economy, it can destroy you on individual level.

This is my personal taking:-

Taking out even 1 hour for yourself from your busy schedule, to talk and to reflect upon yourself is very crucial today. This 1 hour can make your life much more easier and much organized, you can tackle some complex problem in this time.

If you can’t do this then even a half day a week off from work and distractions, in isolation for your deep work on your intellectual level can do wonders.
